Our member breeders carefully select their breeding stock to enhance the good qualities of any particular specimen and to offset any weakness in his/her conformation. Breeders strive to produce a dog that matches the elusive breed standard because that animal would best fulfill the purposes for which the breed has been developed. Health and temperament are always top priorities.
Programs at our meetings include health issues presented by veterinarians, dog show judges and handlers discussing how to show a dog, feeding and grooming tips, legislative concerns, and interpretations of the breed standard.
Club members appear at pet stores, pet fairs, and dog shows around the State, enabling the public to meet individual Boxers in an up-close, hands-on sort of way. We discuss the pro's and con's (there are con's to any breed) of the Boxer as a member of the family, and present a picture of the various channels through which a suitable companion may be identified: breeder, shelter, rescue group, etc.
The friendly competition of a specialty or all-breed conformation dog show licensed by the American Kennel Club enables breeders to measure how well they are doing in improving the breed. Each purebred dog club that is a part of the A.K.C. family of clubs holds one or more shows a year. For C.I.B.C., such shows are at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, in conjunction with other clubs from around the area: Hoosier Kennel Club, Central Indiana Kennel Club, Terre Haute Kennel Club, and a group of other breed clubs. The weekends for these shows are on/around Valentines Day and the last of September/first of October. Agility demonstrations have recently joined obedience classes as an interesting part of these shows.
For those dogs who got lost along the way to the dog show ring, C.I.B.C. has a Boxer Rescue Committee that identifies dogs in crisis. We take them in from shelters, animal controls, owner surrenders, and off the streets. We satisfy their basic needs, provide medical care, spay or neuter, and find new homes - one dog at a time. Those who are involved with Rescue find it often to be exhausting, but always to be intensely rewarding. Saving the lives of approximately fifty plus dogs a year is a feel-good kind of thing.
Between monthly meetings, dog show planning and executing, visiting places where we can talk to the public, and rescuing, there is really little time for purely social events. But we do put all the obligations aside to enjoy each others company at a summer cook-out and a Christmas pitch-in.
Whatever breed of dog a newcomer to town might consider his favorite, there is a group that can help him pursue that interest.
